In the concentration plant design, the throughput capacity of the ball mill is generally determined according to the experiment and experience. And the throughput capacity of the ball mill and rod mill is usually calculated with the volumetric method or power consumption method.
 
The selection of the ball mill shall conform to the following requirements:
 
1. The rod mill is mostly used for coarse grinding; and the particle size of the grinding product is mostly 1-3mm, and can be 0.5mm in the gravity mill. The particle size is too fine, and the grinding efficiency is significantly reduced. Due to the movement influence of the rod mill in the mill, the diameter of the rod mill shall not be generally more than ф4500mm, and the length of the grinding rod shall not be more than 6000mm. While the joint operation of the rod mill and ball mill, the ratio of the rod mill and ball mill shall be 1:2.
 
2. The grate ball mill is mostly used for coarse grinding, and generally used for the first stage grinding in the single-stage grinding or two-stage grinding. While the closed circuit operation, the grinding fineness is generally 50%~70%-0.074mm. The ball mill is mostly equipped with the spiral classifier.
 
3. The overflow ball mill can be used for single-stage grinding, and can also be used for the second stage grinding or regrinding of the intermediate product. Currently, it is mostly used for the second stage grinding or regrinding of the intermediate product, and the classification equipment is generally equipped with the hydrocyclone. The mill can also be equipped with the spiral classifier sometimes when being used for the first stage grinding. For the large-scale ball mill (generally more than ф4000mm), the grinding circuit formed by the overflow ball mill and hydrocyclone is mostly used, thus, simplifying the structure of the mill, and facilitating the maintenance.
 
4. While the selection of the autogenous mill, semi-autogenous mill and pebble mill, it shall specially note whether the raw ore has good autogenous grinding medium, the autogenous grinding medium tester can be used for determining the index of the autogenous grinding medium of the ore, and the data processing is carried out to judge whether it has good autogenous grinding medium, and judge whether to need the semi-industrial test of the autogenous grinding, semi-autogenous grinding and pebble grinding. After the semi-industrial test, the selection calculation shall be carried out on the autogenous mill, semi-autogenous mill and pebble mill with the empirical formula.
